Public affairs analyst Mahdi Shehu has revealed what he described as the reason Tinubu Sacked Service Chiefs, noting that the President acted out of selfish political interest rather than national concern.
In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, Shehu alleged that the President’s decision to reshuffle the service chiefs was motivated by fear and self-preservation amid rumours of a possible coup, rather than by the worsening insecurity across the country.
Citing a biblical passage to reinforce his point, Shehu quoted James 3:16, which says, “For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”
He argued that the verse accurately captures man’s natural inclination toward greed and selfishness — tendencies he believes President Tinubu has exhibited through his recent actions.
“The scriptural references to man’s selfishness are well narrated and documented, with visible confirmation by man himself,” Shehu wrote.
He added that man’s “greed and insatiable economic desires” further demonstrate an “infinite capacity for selfishness.”
The analyst accused President Tinubu of ignoring the escalating violence ravaging many parts of the country while keeping the same security heads in office.
“The ongoing wanton killings nationwide did not prick Tinubu’s conscience to rejig his security architecture,” he said, listing recent incidents of mass killings and attacks in Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger, Yobe, Borno, Benue, Taraba, Kogi, and Nasarawa States.
Shehu lamented that despite these tragedies, the President remained inactive until rumours of a coup began circulating.
“But the moment his brand of democracy came under what was officially denied yet unofficially confirmed as a coup, he acted swiftly and panicky,” he stated.
Describing the cabinet changes as “a coup shrouded in darkness and left to everyone’s imagination,” Shehu alleged that the President only became decisive when his own political survival was threatened.
The public affairs analyst further criticised the administration’s economic management, accusing President Tinubu of retaining what he termed “a wizardly economic team” despite worsening poverty and hunger across the nation.
“With 139 million Nigerians facing abject poverty and hunger, and other glaring economic failures, Tinubu is yet to sack his economic team,” Shehu added.
He concluded that the President’s actions reflect what he called the “selfish nature of man,” adding that leaders often remain blind to their failures “until such a time when they are finally swallowed by the earth.”
President Tinubu had on Friday announced a major reshuffle in Nigeria’s security architecture, relieving several service chiefs of their duties and appointing new ones in what the Presidency described as a move to strengthen national security.
