Governor Dr. Peter Mbah of Enugu State has inaugurated a nine-member committee tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of taxes, levies, fees, and other revenue streams under the control of the state. The panel, which has two weeks to complete its assignment, aims to assess fairness, transparency, and efficiency in the collection of state-controlled revenue.
The committee, chaired by the Solicitor-General of Enugu State, Ikechukwu Ezenwukwa, includes representatives from government, organised labour, civil society, and business groups, such as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Revenue Mobilisation, Adenike Okebu; Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Ben Asogwa; and Chairman of the State Market Association, Chief Chinwuba Igwesi.
Inaugurating the panel at Government House on Friday, Governor Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the committee was established in response to public complaints regarding taxes and revenue practices across the state.
He explained that the committee’s mandate includes: “reviewing existing revenue laws and their implementation; identifying duplication and multiple taxation; evaluating all state-controlled revenue heads, excluding federally administered taxes; and assessing the fairness, transparency, and efficiency of current tax rates and collection processes.”
Mbah also stressed the importance of engaging stakeholders, directing the committee to survey and interview property owners, market traders, local government revenue officers, civil society organisations, and business operators.
Highlighting the government’s broader revenue reforms, the governor said: “We have moved from a fragmented system to a unified, digital, and performance-oriented revenue ecosystem. All payments are now routed through digital platforms, ensuring transparency, traceability, and reducing opportunities for fraud. Each MDA is assigned revenue targets linked to its mandate.”
He concluded: “Revenue is not just a fiscal tool. Every naira collected must translate into better schools, safer roads, cleaner water, and a brighter future for our people.”
Committee Chairman Ezenwukwa commended the governor for his proactive leadership, saying: “This committee reflects Governor Mbah’s commitment to listening to the people. We are honoured to undertake this important task and will justify the confidence placed in us.”
