The Enugu State Government has declared a total ban on roadside mechanic activities and abandoned vehicles across the state, issuing a strict five-day ultimatum for all violators to vacate public roads or face heavy sanctions.
In a joint announcement, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) warned that the growing presence of derelict vehicles and makeshift mechanic workshops on roads has become a major threat to public safety and urban order.
According to the statement, officials have observed with “deep concern” the increasing number of abandoned and broken-down vehicles scattered across major and minor roads, as well as unregulated mechanical operations taking place directly on the asphalt.
“These activities weaken the asphalt, damage the road structure, obstruct the free flow of traffic, and endanger other road users,” the statement said.
Authorities lamented that road shoulders, corridors, and verges have been converted into unauthorized workshops, causing avoidable traffic congestion, environmental hazards, and serious safety risks.
In response, the state government has ordered all vehicle owners, mechanics, artisans, traders, and others occupying unauthorized road spaces to clear out within five days.
“All abandoned vehicles, broken-down vehicles, makeshift mechanic workstations, and roadside activities that pollute or damage the road must be removed within five days,” the Ministry and ECTDA warned. “The use of public roads for trading, long-term parking, mechanical repairs, oil changing, or any activity that obstructs traffic is strictly prohibited.”
Beginning Tuesday, November 25, 2025, enforcement teams will launch a coordinated operation to seize and remove all obstructive vehicles and dismantle roadside mechanic setups.
Sanctions for defaulters will include:
- Fines
- Towing and recovery fees
- Prosecution under relevant Enugu State laws
The government urged all mechanics and artisans to relocate to approved mechanic villages and designated facilities, stressing that the era of roadside repairs is over.
Reaffirming their stance, the agencies said they remain committed to ensuring “clean, safe, orderly, and motorable roads for all residents of Enugu State.”
