Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, for the murder of former presidential aide, Malam Ahmed Gulak.

Delivering judgment, Justice Omotosho ruled that the Federal Government successfully proved beyond reasonable doubt that Kanu is the leader of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the militia group the court held responsible for the killing.

According to the judge, “the evidence presented before the court proves beyond reasonable doubt that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) which the court holds were responsible for the killing of Mr. Gulak.”

Hon. Ahmed Gulak—former Speaker of the Adamawa House of Assembly and ex-Special Adviser on Political Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan—was assassinated by gunmen on May 30, 2021, in Owerri, Imo State, while attempting to catch a flight out of the city.
