Tragedy struck on Thursday in Oba-Ile, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, when a “mentally deranged” man allegedly stabbed a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer to death during an attempt to restrain him.
The incident occurred when the deceased officer, whose identity has yet to be disclosed, tried to subdue the violent suspect who had been causing panic in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect’s mother had called in two NSCDC operatives to help manage her son, who was said to have battled severe mental illness for years.
One witness, who declined to be named, said the situation escalated when one of the officers attempted to chain the suspect to prevent further disturbances.
He recounted that during the struggle, the suspect allegedly overpowered the officer, seized his knife, and stabbed him repeatedly.
“The boy (mentally deranged) suddenly became violent. He struggled with the officer, took his knife, and stabbed him several times. It was shocking because the officer was armed, yet he could not prevent the attack,” the witness said.
The critically injured officer was rushed to a hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival due to the severity of his injuries.
State NSCDC spokesman, Daniel Aidamenbor, confirmed the incident, noting that the operatives had been trying to restrain the suspect with the intention of taking him to a psychiatric hospital for treatment when the attack occurred.
Aidamenbor described the development as a tragic loss that happened during efforts to safeguard both the suspect and members of the community.
