The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed widespread social media claims alleging that the fire incident reported in Ekwusigo Local Government Area on Friday was the result of an armed attack. The Command clarified that the tragedy stemmed from a fatal motor accident involving a fuel tanker and other vehicles.

In an official statement issued on 23rd November 2025, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, described the circulating claims as “fake, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic in the state.”

According to the statement, the incident occurred in the early hours of 21st November 2025 when a tanker truck loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) collided with a Toyota Corolla.

“The collision caused the tanker to burst into flames, resulting in the complete burning of both vehicles and some nearby shops,” SP Tochukwu explained.

A commercial tricycle (Keke) caught within the fire zone was also consumed by the blaze, leading to the tragic death of the rider, who was burned beyond recognition.

The Command said an investigation has already commenced to identify the drivers involved and determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

However, the police condemned what they described as the “irresponsible conduct” of social media users who circulated claims of an armed attack, thereby heightening public fear.

“The Command strongly frowns at individuals or groups using this unfortunate incident to spread panic, fear, and tension in the State,” Tochukwu said.

Reacting to the misinformation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc mnips PhD, has ordered a full probe into the social media publication behind the false alarm.

“The CP has directed that the handler responsible for the fake and misleading report be identified and unmasked,” the statement noted.

Reassuring residents, the Police Command pledged to maintain open communication and uphold public safety.

“We remain committed to ensuring accurate information flow, preventing the spread of misinformation, and ensuring the safety of all residents,” SP Tochukwu added.
