Tensions surged in the U.S. capital on Wednesday after a shooting near the White House left two members of the National Guard wounded, prompting a temporary lockdown of the presidential complex. The development was confirmed by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who announced the incident in a post on X, though she did not immediately provide further details.
Washington police later confirmed that the shooting occurred just one block from the White House, deepening security concerns at one of the most heavily guarded zones in the United States.
According to early reports, the gunfire erupted near the Farragut Metro station, a busy downtown hub. The incident coincided with President Donald Trump’s controversial troop deployment order to Washington, adding a new layer of political tension around the capital.
Following the shooting, the White House was briefly placed on lockdown, though the U.S. Secret Service had not yet issued an official statement or responded to media inquiries as of the time of this report.
President Trump was not in Washington during the incident. He was in Florida, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
