…Hails His Integrity and Technocratic Expertise

The Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Hon. Peter Ogbonna Eze as the Federal Commissioner representing Enugu State in the Federal Character Commission (FCC), following the submission of a comprehensive screening report by the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs.

The committee’s chairman, Senator Allwell Heacho Onyesoh (Rivers East), presented the report during plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, paving the way for a smooth adoption of the recommendations after what lawmakers described as “a hitch-free consideration process.”

Senator Onyesoh informed the chamber that all nominees—including Eze, FCC Executive Chairman-designate Hon. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, and 36 others—were thoroughly screened on Tuesday, November 13, 2025.

“The committee did not receive any criminal complaints on any of the nominees. They appeared before us, submitted all required documents, and demonstrated capacity for the roles they were nominated for,” he said.

He explained that the vetting process was rigorous, involving the review of CVs, Code of Conduct clearance certificates, police and DSS reports, as well as other eligibility documents. Each nominee also underwent a formal presentation and extensive Q&A session.

Presenting his findings, Senator Onyesoh described Peter Eze as “eminently qualified, competent, and a person of proven integrity,” noting that he displayed a firm understanding of the FCC’s mandate and the reforms needed to reposition the commission.

“His appointment will strengthen the capacity of the Federal Character Commission to review outdated statutes and harmonise them with current realities,” Onyesoh added.

Supporting the committee’s recommendation, the Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, moved the motion for the Senate to dissolve into the Committee of the Whole, a motion backed by Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Olalere Oyewumi, who said:

“I rise to support their nomination. From their résumé, they have held different positions both locally and internationally, and I hereby thank Mr President for finding them worthy for nomination.”

After a state-by-state review with no objections raised, the Senate reverted to plenary, where Senate President Akpabio conducted a voice vote that returned unanimous approval.

President Tinubu had earlier announced Eze’s nomination in a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
