Nigerians on social media are mocking what they describe as a dramatic “180-degree turn” by Reno Omokri after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated him for an ambassadorial position — barely two years after Omokri publicly vowed never to work with Tinubu “in any way, shape or form.”
In a resurfaced clip from his 2023 appearance on Seun Okinbaloye’s MIC ON Podcast, Omokri had emphatically ruled out any possibility of accepting an offer from Tinubu.
“It will never happen… I can’t do it. It’s just against my principles. Some people can do that, but it’s not in my DNA. It’s never going to happen,” Omokri said at the time, insisting he would not work with Tinubu even if approached.
He further revealed in that interview that someone from Tinubu’s camp had already contacted him shortly after the election.
“Somebody from Bola Tinubu’s camp has already reached out to me and I told the person that, look, it cannot happen. I can’t do it… I can never work with him,” he declared.
But with President Tinubu now nominating the same Omokri as a Nigerian ambassador, many Nigerians say the former presidential aide has “perfected the art of swallowing his own words.”
On X, users described the situation as “premium hypocrisy,” “a masterclass in political gymnastics,” and “another Nigerian politician doing a backflip with no shame.”
Social commentators say the development reflects the wider culture of political fluidity in Nigeria, where fierce critics often become allies overnight once power is involved.
For many, the irony was too glaring to ignore:
A man who said working with Tinubu was “not in his DNA” has now accepted one of the highest appointments from Tinubu himself.
Whether Omokri addresses the contradiction or simply moves on to his new diplomatic role remains to be seen — but Nigerians online are already having a field day.
