The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has reiterated the enforcement of the ban on the sale and unauthorized use of fireworks across the state during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
CP Giwa said the measure is crucial to preventing criminals from hiding under the noise of fireworks to commit crimes, reducing public panic, and ensuring the protection of lives and property.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe on December 8, 2025, the Commissioner urged individuals and businesses to comply fully with the directive. “People involved in the sale or use of fireworks must desist immediately, as violators will face the full weight of the law,” he warned. He also appealed to parents and guardians to caution their children against purchasing or using knockouts, commonly called “bangers.”
CP Giwa also cautioned residents against bush burning during the harmattan season, noting that such actions pose severe risks. “Bush burning during harmattan can easily trigger fire outbreaks that endanger lives, destroy property, and disrupt community life. Anyone caught will be duly prosecuted,” he stated.
He encouraged the public to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of the police efforts to maintain peace throughout the festive period. “We urge residents to work with the Police to ensure a safe and peaceful yuletide. Suspicious persons or criminal activities should be reported promptly,” he added.
