The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to resume the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy from January 2, 2026, citing growing security concerns and the need to curb crimes linked to the use of unauthorised tinted vehicle windows.
The Force made the announcement in a statement issued on Monday, December 15, 2025, and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, anipr, mipra, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the statement, the decision to reinstate enforcement was taken pending the final determination of a matter currently before the court, following what the Police described as “a careful review of emerging security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of all citizens.”
The Police clarified that the enforcement of the tinted glass regulation had never been halted by any court order. “It is important to clarify that at no point did the court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the law regarding the use of tinted glass on vehicles,” the statement said.
However, the Force explained that it had earlier suspended enforcement “in the spirit of responsibility, transparency, and public convenience,” in order to give motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the registration process without undue pressure.
The statement noted that recent developments had made the resumption of enforcement unavoidable. “Recent trends reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” the Police said, adding that “some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes.”
“In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities,” the statement added.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be conducted professionally and lawfully. According to him, the exercise will be carried out “with utmost professionalism, respect for the rights of citizens, and in accordance with extant laws.”
Egbetokun further reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety, stating that the Police remain dedicated to “promoting public safety and upholding the rule of law while working collaboratively with all stakeholders to keep Nigeria secure.”
The Police also advised motorists who require tinted glass permits to apply through approved channels and ensure full compliance with legal requirements ahead of the resumption date.
