The Enugu State Government has made digital skills training a mandatory requirement for the promotion of civil servants, in a sweeping reform aimed at building a modern, efficient and citizen-responsive public service.
The policy, which aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of transforming Enugu into a digitally driven state, has been institutionalised across ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), as well as local government areas.
According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on MSMEs and Digital Economy, and Director-General of the Enugu SME Center/Enugu MSME & Startup Agency, Mr. Arinze Chilo-Offiah, the initiative follows the successful rollout of several digital training cohorts coordinated by the Enugu SME Center and the Office of Digital Economy.
Chilo-Offiah disclosed that tens of thousands of civil servants have already been trained and equipped with critical skills in productivity tools, e-governance systems and cybersecurity.
“This landmark reform ensures that no public servant is left behind in the digital age,” he said. “It is designed to boost transparency, accelerate e-service delivery and upskill our workforce in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s ‘Tomorrow is Here’ agenda.”
He explained that the compulsory digital skills requirement is intended to entrench efficiency, inclusion and security within the state’s civil service, while positioning Enugu as a leading sub-national government in digital transformation.
“The goal is a civil service that is fit for purpose—one that leverages technology to serve citizens better, faster and more securely,” Chilo-Offiah added.
The development marks a significant step in Enugu State’s ongoing public sector reforms, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to innovation, accountability and sustainable governance.
