Ghana’s security agencies have recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against cybercrime with the arrest of 48 suspected cybercrime operatives during a coordinated nighttime operation in the Dawhenya area of the Ningo-Prampram Constituency.
The operation was led by the Cyber Security Authority of Ghana (CSA) in collaboration with National Security and the Ghana Police Service, following intelligence-led investigations into organised cybercrime networks operating within the area.
According to a statement signed by the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, preliminary interrogation revealed that all 48 suspects are believed to be Nigerian nationals, comprising 46 males and two females.
“Once again, we have struck at the heart of cybercrime operations within our beloved Homeland,” the minister said, describing the raid as a decisive move against digital criminal networks.
He disclosed that the suspects are linked to multiple cyber-related offences, including romance scams, online investment fraud, impersonation schemes and illicit online gold trading.
Items recovered during the operation included 54 laptops, 39 mobile phones, one Starlink internet device and eight MTN TurboNet routers, all believed to have been used in facilitating the criminal activities.
“We are committed to carrying out intelligence-led surgical strikes against these crime syndicates to ensure that we rid our cyber ecosystem of these criminals,” George stated.
While reaffirming Ghana’s openness to legitimate business and innovation, the minister warned that the country would remain unwelcoming to criminal elements exploiting digital platforms.
“Ghana welcomes everyone interested in legitimate enterprise. We will remain a hostile domain for cyber criminals,” he declared.
George also commended the professionalism of the operatives involved in the operation, praising the security agencies for their dedication and global reputation.
“I commend the operatives who carried out this operation with the professionalism for which our security services are globally recognised. Their service is celebrated,” he said.
He concluded the statement on a lighter note, extending goodwill to citizens while reinforcing the government’s commitment to digital safety.
“I wish all a merry digital Christmas and a cyber crime-free New Year,” the minister added.
Investigations into the activities of the suspects are ongoing, with authorities expected to take further legal action in line with Ghanaian law.
