Former Senator representing Enugu East Senatorial Zone, Senator Prince Gilbert Emeka Nnaji, has formally resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after 27 years of membership and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Nnaji, a pioneer member of the PDP, conveyed his decision in a resignation letter dated December 26, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of PDP, Umuenwene Ward, Iji Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
In the letter titled “Notice of Resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP),” a copy of which was obtained by The Advocate in Enugu on Monday, the former senator said he could no longer remain in the party, describing it as not only irredeemable but also irreparable.
“I respectfully inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, after 27 years,” Nnaji stated.
He described his exit as a difficult decision, recalling the ideals upon which the PDP was founded and the hope it once inspired for national development.
“Indeed, it was a difficult task to arrive at this conclusion. This is particularly given the national development prospects and opportunities that the PDP of our dreams held for our dear country, Nigeria. The Party was founded on the core democratic ideals driven by unity, patriotism, justice, fairness, transparency, selflessness, mutual respect, and resilience,” he said.
Nnaji also highlighted his long-standing commitment and contributions to the party over the years.
“Also, it is verifiable that over the years, and in various capacities, I was not only faithfully committed but also made immense contributions and added tremendous value to this once-largest party in Africa, as it were,” he added.
However, he lamented what he described as the steady decline of the party from its founding principles.
“However, recent developments have confirmed that the PDP of the Founding Fathers has become as irredeemable as it is irreparable. It is indeed unfortunate!” Nnaji said.
The former lawmaker disclosed that after wide-ranging consultations, he resolved to seek an alternative political platform to pursue his vision for national development.
“After extensive consultations with my family, associates, and other eminent citizens across Nigeria, I am left with the only option of seeking a better platform to continue to contribute to national development. This is essential to further my passion for a Nigeria that works for Nigerians,” he stated.
Explaining his choice of a new political home, Nnaji said he found the ADC aligned with his aspirations.
“Meanwhile, for the record, I have found in the African Democratic Congress, ADC, a veritable and promising ground with great and motivated like-minded compatriots to join forces in redirecting the ship of our Nigerian state,” he said.
He concluded the letter by appreciating the party leadership and wishing the PDP well.
“So as I thank you for your understanding, may I wish you and the PDP well,” Nnaji added.
Senator Nnaji is expected to be among top South-East political figures who will formally declare for the ADC at a ceremony scheduled to hold in Enugu on Wednesday.
