At least seven members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council, have died, while four others sustained severe injuries in a lone fatal road accident involving an NUJ bus along the Gombe–Yola Road.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday evening as the journalists were reportedly returning from a wedding ceremony.
The victims were members of an NUJ delegation who had travelled to celebrate with a colleague, a staff member of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), who had just wedded.
Six of the seven deceased were employees of NTA Gombe. They were identified as Manu Haruna Kwami (Manager, Administration), Zarah Umar (Manager, News), Isa (Editor), Musa Tabra (Retired Manager, News), Aminu (Driver), Adams (StarTimes), and Judith I. O. Subeb.
Those who sustained serious injuries in the crash were identified as Emmanuel Akila, Steven Doddo, Nina, and Jonathan Bara. They are currently receiving medical treatment at health facilities within the state.
Efforts to obtain official comments from the Gombe State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were unsuccessful, as repeated calls to the Sector Commander, Samson Kaura, were not answered as of the time of filing this report.
