A cleric of the Baptist Church, Rev. Samson Okoro Elekwa, has praised the family of former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, for what he described as an extraordinary demonstration of compassion and service to humanity during the Christmas season.
Rev. Elekwa disclosed that the Kalu family, working alongside the senator’s brothers, Chief Nnanna Kalu and Mascot Uzor Kalu, extended support to more than 9,500 families across the 17 local government areas of Abia State, with each beneficiary receiving N25,000 as part of the 2025 Christmas celebrations.
He noted that while the Kalu family is widely known for philanthropy, the sheer scale of the Christmas outreach compelled him to personally verify the report.
According to the cleric, he reached out to the Chairman of the Abia State chapter of the OUK Movement, Hon. Sunday Ojisi (Abacha), who confirmed that the distribution had indeed taken place across the state.
Describing the initiative as a rare and sincere expression of love in action, Rev. Elekwa said the gesture reflects the core teachings of Christianity. “This is the spirit of love. Christ preached love while on earth, and this family has clearly shown that love in practical terms,” he said.
The cleric further observed that Senator Kalu and his brothers have consistently demonstrated generosity and empathy, particularly at a time when many families are struggling under economic pressure. He called on other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the Kalu family by reaching out to the less privileged within their communities.
Beyond the Christmas outreach, Senator Kalu has continued to receive widespread recognition for his sustained philanthropic activities across Abia North and other parts of the state.
Over the years, he has supported education through scholarship schemes, classroom construction projects, and the donation of learning materials to schools across the state.
The lawmaker has also made notable contributions to healthcare delivery by facilitating medical outreaches, donating hospital equipment, and assisting patients in need of urgent medical care—interventions observers say have helped to bridge gaps in underserved rural communities.
In addition, Senator Kalu has been credited with implementing empowerment programmes targeted at youths and women, including skills acquisition initiatives, financial support for small businesses, and the execution of community infrastructure projects such as road rehabilitation and water supply schemes.
Rev. Elekwa concluded by offering prayers for God’s continued guidance and strength for the Kalu family, stressing that acts of kindness and selfless service remain the true measure of leadership. He added that such gestures not only ease hardship but also foster unity, peace, and a sense of shared responsibility within society.
