Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political realignment in the state.
The governor’s defection was announced on Friday by the National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, in a statement shared on social media.
Welcoming Mutfwang into the ruling party, Yilwatda described the move as a significant boost to the APC’s growing political strength and influence.
“On behalf of the National Working Committee and the entire family of the All Progressives Congress, I warmly welcome His Excellency, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, into our great party, the APC,” Yilwatda said.
He described the governor’s decision as courageous and driven by a sense of higher national purpose.
“Your decision to join the progressive family is a bold and patriotic step, driven by a higher calling to serve the people of Plateau State and Nigeria,” the APC chairman said.
According to Yilwatda, Mutfwang’s defection signals renewed hope and commitment to development in Plateau State.
“Today’s registration is a statement of hope and a commitment to a shared vision of inclusive development, peace, and prosperity for Plateau State,” he added.
The APC chairman assured the governor of full cooperation and partnership, pledging that the party would work closely with him to deliver dividends of democracy.
“We receive you with open arms and a deep sense of partnership, and I assure you of our collective resolve to work closely with you, hand in hand, to advance the interests of Plateau State, strengthen our party, and deliver meaningful dividends of democracy to our people,” Yilwatda said.
Details of the circumstances surrounding Mutfwang’s defection were not immediately disclosed.
However, the development comes days after the governor, in a letter dated December 30, announced his resignation from the PDP, amid speculations that he was preparing to join the ruling APC.
Mutfwang was elected governor of Plateau State in 2023 on the platform of the PDP before his latest political switch.
