The Enugu State Government has approved the immediate dismissal of a consultant at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane, following the conclusion of a disciplinary process that found the officer culpable of professional misconduct.

The decision was conveyed through an official directive from the Office of the Governor, issued via the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health Matters, after a comprehensive review of the findings of a duly constituted disciplinary panel.

According to the directive, Governor Peter Mbah approved the dismissal with immediate effect, in line with extant regulations governing public service conduct and healthcare practice in the state.

Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of ESUTH, speaking on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, said the action underscored the government’s resolve to enforce ethical standards and accountability within the health sector.

“The dismissal has been directed to be formally communicated and made public as a deterrent to erring staff, and to reinforce accountability among consultants, doctors, nurses and all healthcare workers within the teaching hospital and the wider public health system,” the PRO said.

The decision comes against the backdrop of a widely reported incident in December 2025 involving allegations of extortion at ESUTH. Journalist101.com recalls that a story went viral alleging that the parents of a child living with sickle cell anaemia were asked to make private payments before their child could receive urgent medical care.

According to the reports, the head of the Sickle Cell and Cancer Department—whose identity JOURNALIST101 has now confirmed to be Dr. C.I Eneh—allegedly demanded a ₦10,000 consultation fee and an additional ₦50,000 described as a “service charge” to conduct a blood transfusion on the critically ill child in a government-owned hospital.

While official investigations did not publicly disclose the identity of the affected consultant, the state government reiterated that it would not tolerate any form of abuse of office, exploitation of patients or professional misconduct, especially in the health sector where public trust and patient safety are paramount.

The ESUTH spokesperson further disclosed that the hospital management has been instructed to implement the dismissal without delay and ensure that all administrative procedures are carried out strictly in accordance with Civil Service Rules and institutional guidelines.

“The Enugu State Government remains resolute in its commitment to protecting the dignity of patients and ensuring the delivery of safe, ethical and quality healthcare services across all state-owned health institutions,” the PRO added.
