The Senator representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District, Ogoshi Onawo, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), further deepening the crisis rocking the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general election.

The PDP has been embroiled in prolonged internal leadership disputes, a situation that has weakened the party and triggered a steady loss of members, including several high-profile political figures defecting to rival platforms.

Onawo’s exit adds to a growing list of over a dozen senators who have dumped the party with just over one year to the polls. He announced his decision in a resignation letter dated January 10, addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Galadimawa Ward, Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Although the lawmaker did not disclose his next political destination, he has reportedly been sighted at activities of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), having attended the party’s meeting in July 2025—fueling speculation about a possible defection.

In the resignation letter, the senator wrote: “I write to formally notify you of my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Galadimawa Ward, Doma Local Government Area, with effect from today, 10th January, 2026.”

Explaining his decision, Onawo stated, “This decision has been taken after careful consideration and is purely for personal reasons.”

He expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities given to him, noting: “I wish to sincerely thank the party leadership, members, and supporters for the opportunity and platform afforded me over the years to serve my people in various capacities.”

The senator further added, “I remain deeply grateful for the trust, cooperation, and support I received throughout my time in the party.”

Concluding the letter, he said, “Please accept my appreciation and best wishes for the continued progress and success of the party.”

Onawo’s resignation underscores the mounting challenges facing the PDP as it struggles to maintain cohesion and relevance amid intensifying political realignments nationwide.
