The Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has stepped into the lingering political crisis in the state, announcing the formation of a nine-man committee to mediate and restore peace.

The intervention was disclosed in a press release dated January 14, 2026, and issued by the Office of the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers.

According to the statement, the council resolved to establish the committee in response to the protracted political situation in the state, with a mandate to engage critical stakeholders and work out lasting solutions.

“The Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has set up a 9-Man Committee to mediate in the protracted political situation in the State,” the chairman of the council, His Majesty, Eze Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo, said in the statement.

He explained that the committee is chaired by His Majesty, Dr. Suanu T. Y. Baridam, with His Majesty, Eze Barr. Nwachukwu Nnam Obi, serving as co-chairman, noting that the team is expected to interface with relevant actors across the political divide.

“The Committee… is expected to interface with relevant stakeholders with a view to proffering sustainable and enduring solutions to peace in the State,” the chairman said.

Other members of the committee include His Majesty, Eze Uchechukwu Isaiah-Elikwu; His Majesty, Eze Leslie Eke; His Majesty, Dr. Samuel Amaechi; His Majesty, Dr. Felix Otuwarikpo; His Majesty, Eze Barr. Onyeka Amaonwu; HRH King Agolia Aboko; and HRH Eze Nwankwo Nwankwo. Barrister Darlington Owiria will serve as secretary of the committee.

The council also appealed for restraint among citizens and political supporters, warning that inflammatory comments could worsen the situation.

“In view of the sensitive nature of the issues before the public, we appeal to supporters of all factions, social media enthusiasts and the general public to moderate their comments in order not to escalate the situation,” Worlu-Wodo said.

He further urged residents to avoid actions capable of disrupting public order.

“We further urge citizens to refrain from acts likely to cause a breach of the peace in the State,” the statement added.

The traditional rulers reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability in Rivers State, concluding the statement with a call for unity and calm as the mediation process begins.
