President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred Nigeria’s highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), on renowned businessman and philanthropist, Ambassador Gilbert Chagoury, in recognition of his outstanding services and long-standing contributions to the country.
The honour was formally conveyed in an Instrument of Conferment of National Honour signed by President Tinubu in his capacity as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
According to the instrument, the conferment was made in exercise of the powers vested in the President under Section 1(4) of the National Honours Act, in appreciation of Chagoury’s virtues, commitment, and services to Nigeria.
By the award, Ambassador Chagoury is entitled to the title, dignity, and full privileges of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, one of the country’s most prestigious national honours, traditionally reserved for individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the nation.
The honour was granted in Abuja on January 8, 2026, under the hand and public seal of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Gilbert Chagoury, a close associate of President Tinubu for decades, is widely regarded as a key figure in Nigeria’s business and philanthropic circles, with significant investments and contributions spanning infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social development.
