The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that its investigation into allegations of a plot to overthrow the Federal Government has implicated some serving military officers, following months of internal scrutiny.

Sixteen military officers were arrested in October 2025 over alleged acts of indiscipline and serious breaches of service regulations, including claims that they were involved in activities aimed at undermining Nigeria’s constitutional order. The Armed Forces of Nigeria disclosed that investigations into the matter have now been concluded.

In a statement issued on Monday, January 26, 2026, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the final investigation report has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities in line with existing military regulations.

According to the statement, the findings revealed that some of the officers engaged in conduct inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards of the Nigerian military, including allegations of plotting to overthrow the government and undermine constitutional authority.

“The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, has carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel. The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN,” the statement read.

The Defence Headquarters further disclosed that officers found to have cases to answer will be arraigned before relevant military judicial panels for trial, in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service laws.
