The only senator elected on the platform of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Pam Dachungyang, has formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), dealing a major blow to the opposition party in the Senate.

Dachungyang’s defection was announced on Thursday during plenary, when his letter was read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

In the letter, the lawmaker, who represents Plateau North Senatorial District, said his decision followed wide-ranging consultations with his constituents, political associates and key stakeholders.

He explained that the move was also guided by his desire to identify with a political platform that aligns more closely with his principles and aspirations for effective governance.

“My defection was informed by the need to align with a political platform that best reflects my commitment to good governance, inclusive development and the overall interests of the people of my senatorial district,” Dachungyang stated.

The senator further attributed his exit from the ADP to unresolved internal crises within the party.

“My defection is also necessitated by irreconcilable differences and persistent internal wrangling within the Action Democratic Party,” he said.

According to him, the internal challenges within the party had significantly limited his capacity to advance its ideals and deliver meaningful representation to his constituents.

“I am confident that the All Progressives Congress provides a more stable, a more progressive platform through which I can continue to serve my constituency and the nation with renewed focus and dedication,” he added.

Dachungyang formally notified the Senate of his decision in line with constitutional provisions, appealing for acceptance into his new party.

“Kindly accept this letter as my formal notification, in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and please accept me into the fold of the APC and also accept the assurances of my highest regard,” he stated.

Responding, Senate President Godswill Akpabio welcomed the lawmaker into the APC and wished him success in his political journey.
