The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared its readiness for the 2027 general election, announcing that preparations are already well underway despite delays in the amendment of the Electoral Act.
The Commission disclosed that it has completed the election timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 polls, even as the National Assembly is yet to pass the amended Electoral Act.
INEC explained that it is currently awaiting the conclusion of the legislative process on the proposed changes to the electoral law, which is expected to provide the legal framework for aspects of the forthcoming election.
The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja during an interactive meeting with representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
According to Amupitan, the Commission has already forwarded its recommendations on the proposed amendment to the National Assembly but cautioned that the timing of the passage of the new Electoral Act could have implications for certain elements of the election timetable.
He noted that some activities outlined in the schedule may require adjustments, depending on when the amended law is eventually passed and signed into law.
Despite the uncertainty, the INEC Chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to delivering a free, fair, and credible election, adding that until a new Electoral Act comes into force, INEC will continue to operate strictly within the provisions of the existing law.
