The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Enugu State chapter, has declared that the people of the South-East geopolitical zone are strongly demanding the inclusion of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results in the ongoing amendment of Nigeria’s Electoral Act.

The party made the call on Friday while reacting to reports that the Nigerian Senate had rejected the proposal to make electronic transmission of results compulsory, a development that has sparked widespread public outrage.

Although the reported rejection has since been disputed by members of the minority caucus in the Senate, the Enugu ADC described the controversy surrounding the Electoral Act amendment as “unfortunate and embarrassing” for the country.

In a press statement signed by the National Coordinator of ADC Like-Minds, Comrade Adolphus Ude, on behalf of the Enugu ADC Media Team, the party alleged that the groundwork for rigging the 2027 general election was already being laid at the National Assembly.

“We received with heavy heart, shock and disbelief the report that the Nigerian Senate rejected the mandatory real-time electronic transmission of results in the Electoral Act amendment,” Ude said.

“This is not only very unfortunate, but an embarrassment to the nation.”

According to the party, any attempt to drop or weaken the provision for mandatory electronic transmission would undermine the credibility, transparency and acceptability of future elections, including the 2027 polls.

Ude accused the Senate of acting in line with the interests of the Executive arm of government rather than the wishes of Nigerians who are clamouring for a technology-driven electoral system capable of reducing manipulation during manual collation of results.

“The senators refused to pass this critical amendment which Nigerians seriously desire. Instead, they are following the script of the executive arm of government, which is doing everything possible to ensure that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) remains in power beyond May 2027,” he alleged.

Raising concerns about democratic accountability, the ADC questioned the independence of the legislature.

“Where is the separation of powers? Where are the checks and balances? The senators are representatives of the people, yet they failed to do what the people want,” the statement read.

The party stressed that the South-East, in particular, is eager for the amendment, describing mandatory electronic transmission of results as essential to guaranteeing free, fair and transparent elections in the region.

“The masses in the South-East are seriously yearning for this critical amendment to ensure a credible electoral process. We therefore call on Igbo senators to rise to the occasion and ensure that the right thing is done,” Ude said.

“Nigeria cannot afford another fraudulent election in 2027.”

Enugu ADC further argued that compulsory real-time electronic transmission of results would help restore public confidence in the electoral system and ensure that votes truly count.

The party noted that a transparent and verifiable electronic process could also reverse growing voter apathy and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

“The Senate must do the needful by inserting mandatory electronic transmission of results in the Electoral Act amendment,” the statement concluded.
