The Nigerian Senate has recalled its members from recess for an emergency plenary session to address urgent legislative matters, including issues linked to the recently passed Electoral Bill.
The emergency sitting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 12:00 noon in the Senate Chamber, Abuja.
The directive was conveyed in an official notice issued by the Office of the Clerk of the Senate and signed by Emmanuel Odo, JP, PhD.
According to the notice, the emergency session was ordered by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, with all senators requested to attend.
The notice read that all Distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are expected to take note of the date and be present, while apologies were extended for any inconvenience the recall may cause.
Although the official communication did not expressly state the agenda, it is understood that the primary focus of the session is the formal adoption of the Votes and Proceedings of the Senate sitting held on February 4, 2026, during which the controversial Electoral Bill was passed.
The adoption of the Votes and Proceedings is considered a critical procedural step required before the Conference Committee can begin work. The committee is expected to harmonise the Senate’s version of the bill with that of the House of Representatives.
The emergency recall comes amid sustained public pressure on the National Assembly to complete legislative processes relating to electoral reforms without further delay.
There is also growing public interest in whether the adopted proceedings will affirm the Senate’s position on electronic transmission of election results, a major reform being demanded by several stakeholders across the country.
Observers say the outcome of the emergency sitting will determine the next phase of legislative action on the Electoral Bill and could significantly shape the legal framework for future elections in Nigeria.
