The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, has lauded the Delta State Government for ongoing infrastructure projects across the state, while raising serious concerns over deteriorating healthcare facilities, poor road conditions, and rising housing costs.
The position was part of resolutions reached at the Chapel’s congress held on Monday, February 10, 2026.
Commendation for Infrastructure Drive
The journalists praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration for what they described as significant strides in road construction and rehabilitation, particularly in Warri and Effurun.
They specifically highlighted the construction of major flyovers and bridges at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Junction, DSC Roundabout, and Enerhen Junction, noting that the projects are expected to ease traffic congestion and stimulate economic activities in the twin cities.
The Chapel also commended the recent groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed flyover at the Otowodo axis in Ughelli and expressed optimism over plans to construct additional bridges in other parts of the state.
Healthcare in ‘Disturbing’ Condition
Despite the commendation, the NUJ expressed deep concern over what it described as the declining state of healthcare services in Delta State.
The Chapel observed that many general hospitals lack essential equipment required for effective service delivery. Particular reference was made to the Dentistry Department of the Ughelli General Hospital, where dental chairs and tables were described as dilapidated and urgently in need of replacement.
The journalists called on the Commissioner for Health to embark on an assessment tour of health facilities across the state with a view to addressing the identified shortcomings.
Roads and Housing Under Scrutiny
The union also lamented the poor state of several roads, citing the Isaba–Otutuama Road, the Ophorigbala–Ighwurogu axis in Ughelli South Local Government Area, and roads within the Idjerhe community in Ethiope West Local Government Area.
A special appeal was made for the immediate repair of Eburu Road in Okumagba Layout, Warri, which now houses the Chapel’s newly acquired Secretariat.
On housing, the Chapel decried the rising cost of rented accommodation across the state, blaming exploitative practices by house agents for arbitrary rent increases imposed by landlords.
The journalists warned that the situation has compounded the economic hardship faced by residents and urged the state government to intervene by setting up a committee to regulate rent practices.
They also recommended the adoption of a more flexible rent payment structure similar to what obtains in Lagos State, where tenants are allowed to pay rent for a minimum of six months based on affordability.
Call for Transparent Elections
As political activities gradually build up ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Chapel urged the state government to ensure fairness and neutrality in the electoral process.
The journalists advocated for the real-time electronic transmission of election results, describing it as essential to strengthening transparency and boosting public confidence in elections.
Condolences
The Chapel also expressed sympathy to the family of the late Godwin Brotu, a member of the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel.
Condolences were extended to Mr. Sunny Ariegue over the passing of his mother, Mrs. Office Christiana Ukerume, and to Mrs. Njideka Igbani on the death of her father, Hon. Reuben Chukwudiebele Agba.
The union prayed for divine strength and comfort for the bereaved families.
