Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, will remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) overnight following hours of questioning by investigators, his media aide has confirmed.

El-Rufai honoured the anti-graft agency’s invitation on Monday morning and has since been responding to questions over alleged fraud during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023.

Providing an update late Monday night, his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, disclosed that the former governor was still with EFCC officials.

“UPDATE: Malam Nasir @elrufai today honoured the invitation extended to him by the EFCC. He had a frank and fruitful interaction with the EFCC officials, whom his counsel noted were entirely professional in their approach and conduct. He remains with the EFCC.”

A source within the commission, quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the former governor was being interrogated by detectives but could not confirm how long the session would last.

“He is with our investigators, but cannot confirm how long he would be questioned, it is still early to know how long he will stay there,” the source said.

Another source hinted at the possibility of El-Rufai being taken to court for arraignment, although no official confirmation had been issued at press time.

Fresh DSS Charges

The development comes amid a separate legal action by the Department of State Services (DSS), which has filed charges against El-Rufai over allegations that he was involved in bugging the phone of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television over the weekend, El-Rufai had claimed that someone tapped Ribadu’s phone and heard him allegedly ordering his arrest.

The twin developments mark a significant escalation in the legal and political troubles facing the former governor, as investigations and possible court proceedings loom.
