President Bola Tinubu has signed the 2026 Electoral Act into law, formally repealing the Electoral Act 2022 and ushering in a new legal framework to guide Nigeria’s elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.
The President assented to the amended legislation in the presence of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.
The signing followed the harmonisation of the bill by both chambers of the National Assembly on Tuesday, a process that drew opposition from minority lawmakers during deliberations.
With presidential assent secured, the new law now replaces the Electoral Act 2022 and re-enacts the Electoral Act 2026, introducing fresh provisions aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral framework and addressing contentious issues ahead of the next general election cycle.
The development marks a significant milestone in ongoing electoral reforms as political stakeholders prepare for the 2027 general election.
