The All Progressives Congress (APC) has indefinitely suspended its Ward, Local Government Area (LGA), and State congresses in Abia State, a move that comes amid growing political speculation over Governor Alex Otti’s rumoured defection.
The decision was formally communicated in a letter dated February 18, 2026, and addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The correspondence, signed by the APC National Chairman, Professor Mentawe Goshwe Yilwatida, and the party’s National Secretary, Senator Nurujudeen Ajibola Bashiru, stated that the congresses earlier scheduled in line with the party’s approved timetable of activities have been put on hold.
According to the letter, the congresses have been “suspended until further notice.”
The party leadership explained that the suspension followed ongoing consultations and the need to finalise preparatory arrangements before proceeding.
It stated that the decision was taken to allow the conclusion of “certain preparatory and administrative processes to ensure an orderly, transparent and credible conduct of the congresses in the state.”
The APC maintained that the move was procedural and aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the internal electoral process.
Confirming the development, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the party had formally informed INEC in compliance with the Electoral Act.
He noted that the notification was necessary under the law and assured that a fresh date would be announced once consultations are concluded.
According to him, “a new date shall be communicated in due course.”
The suspension comes at a time of heightened political activity in Abia State, with unconfirmed reports suggesting possible realignments within the state’s political landscape.
While the APC did not directly link the decision to any defection rumours, observers say the timing has fueled speculation about broader strategic considerations within the party ahead of future electoral contests.
For now, party members and stakeholders in Abia await further directives from the national leadership as consultations continue.
