Tragedy struck Agamọ community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State on Wednesday evening as its traditional ruler, Oba Kehinde Falodun, was killed by suspected bandits who reportedly stormed his palace.
According to reports, about 10 heavily armed men invaded the monarch’s residence in what was believed to be an attempted abduction. Community sources said the attackers met resistance from the royal father before the situation turned deadly.
A resident, who spoke anonymously, described the harrowing scene: “When the assailants shot at him several times and the bullets didn’t penetrate, they hit him on the head with a heavy object, leading to his death.”
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the killing on Thursday. The command’s spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, said law enforcement authorities had launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
“The victim was later found a few metres away with gunshot wounds. He was confirmed dead at the scene,” Jimoh stated.
He explained that security forces responded swiftly after receiving distress reports from the community.
“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), alongside tactical teams from the command, promptly mobilised officers in collaboration with local security outfits.
“Atuluse Security, local hunters, and Ondo State Security Network Agency operatives also assisted in combing adjoining bushes and surrounding areas in a bid to apprehend the perpetrators. Efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects,” he added.
The police spokesperson assured residents that intensified security operations were underway to forestall further attacks.
“Monitoring and surveillance activities have been intensified across the area to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further breakdown of law and order. The public is assured that no stone will be left unturned in bringing those responsible for the heinous act to justice,” Jimoh said.
The killing comes barely weeks after suspected bandits attacked Ayede community, also in Akure North, abducting a pregnant woman, Mrs. Mary Jesulayomi, who was later freed after a ransom was reportedly paid.
In response to the growing wave of insecurity, the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, recently announced the arrest of 12 suspects linked to banditry in the local government area.
Residents have since voiced deep concern over the escalating violence, urging security agencies to reinforce patrols and restore calm to affected communities.
