Operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have searched the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in a dramatic turn of events following his recent detention.
The raid on the ex-governor’s Aso Drive home occurred Thursday night, shortly after he had been granted bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
ICPC Confirms Custody
El-Rufai had honoured an invitation by the EFCC on Monday and was later granted bail. However, ICPC officials subsequently picked him up.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the anti-graft agency confirmed that the former governor was in its custody.
“The Commission wishes to state that Malam Nasiru El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, is in our custody as at the close of work today, Wednesday, the 18th day of February, 2026,” the statement read.
“He is in the custody of the Commission in connection with ongoing investigations.”
While the ICPC did not disclose details of the probe, it said further updates would be provided in line with its mandate and procedures.
Spokesman, Lawyer React
On Thursday night, El-Rufai’s spokesman, Muyiwa Adekeye, disclosed via social media that the former governor’s residence had been searched.
“UPDATE: The Aso Drive residence of Malam Nasir @elrufai was today searched by the ICPC.”
Ubong Akpan, counsel to the former governor, criticised the operation, describing it “as unlawful, and a clear violation of legal procedures and fundamental rights.”
A social media user, Imran U. Wakili (PULLO), also wrote on X:
“The residence of Malam Nasir El-Rufai was today searched by the ICPC. Details regarding the warrant status and the outcome of the search remain unclear as of the time of filing this report. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the operation. They should continue, but they should just pray that they are doing everything legally, this is the height of desperation. Again, They will not find anything incriminating, Mallam is as pure as Linkafani.”
Background to the Investigation
The development comes amid mounting political tension surrounding the former governor.
The Kaduna State House of Assembly had earlier recommended his investigation over alleged fraud amounting to N432 billion — allegations El-Rufai has consistently denied.
As of press time, the ICPC has not released additional details regarding the search or the specific focus of its investigation.
