President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing pressing family considerations.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, quoted President Tinubu as saying: “We are grateful for Mr Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation. His professionalism, dedication, and commitment to strengthening internal security have been exemplary.”
Appointed in June 2023 for a four-year term set to end in 2027, Egbetokun’s resignation comes amid ongoing national security challenges.
In response, President Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting IGP with immediate effect. “AIG Disu’s experience, operational insight, and proven leadership will ensure steady guidance for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period,” the President added.
Under the Police Act 2020, the Nigeria Police Council will soon consider Disu’s substantive appointment, after which the Senate will review his confirmation.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to a professional, accountable, and fully equipped police force capable of meeting its constitutional responsibilities.
