The Enugu State House of Assembly has commenced legislative action to streamline tax administration in the state, as a bill seeking to harmonise taxes and levies passed its first reading on the floor of the House.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by the Minority Leader, Rt. Hon. Iloabuchi Aniagu, is titled “The Harmonised Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection), House Bill 16, 2026.”

The bill aims to harmonise taxes and levies collectible by the government, simplify collection processes, enhance accountability through technology, and eliminate multiple taxes, levies, and illegal roadblocks that have long been a source of concern for residents and businesses.

Presiding over the plenary, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Honourable Ezenta Ezeani, urged lawmakers to thoroughly study the bill ahead of the next stage of legislative consideration.

He charged members to go home and carefully go through the bill in readiness for the second reading.

Meanwhile, the House adjourned plenary until March 5, 2026, when further deliberations on the proposed harmonised tax regime are expected to continue.
