The CEO of SMobile Nigeria Limited, Dr. Kingsley Adonu was formally presented with the prestigious “Icon of Entrepreneurship Award” by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, on Tuesday, 24th February 2026.
The award, originally conferred during the 2025 Press Week, celebrates outstanding innovation and achievement in entrepreneurship.
Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, the CEO expressed heartfelt gratitude.
“I’m very, very happy for this award. It’s a privilege. I don’t take this recognition for granted. I dedicate it to God and hope it paves the way for more achievements in the future,” he said.
Highlighting SMobile Nigeria Limited’s influence in the telecommunications sector, the CEO detailed how the company empowers youths while growing the business.
“I’m a major partner and distributor of MTN Nigeria,” he said. “Through SMobile NetZone Limited, we manage airtime, data, and other MTN products. Our goal is to not only grow the business but also empower young people through our S-Mobile Technological Institute.”
The institute equips youths with practical digital skills, including cybersecurity, software and hardware development, and application building, offering constructive alternatives to criminal activities.
“Instead of engaging in criminal activities, young people can channel their skills into productive ventures,” he added.
On SMobile’s edge in Nigeria’s telecom sector, he stated:
“In 2024, SMobile ranked first in Nigeria for distributing MTN products. We don’t wait for customers to come to us—we reach out to them. We manage over 10% of M10’s active users in Nigeria, and that’s the impact of our proactive approach.”
He also highlighted the company’s pioneering digital solutions, such as the app enabling customers to print data directly from a browser, and its expansion across the Southeast in 2023.

Youth Empowerment at the Core
The CEO emphasized the institute’s mission:
“Empowerment is not only about giving opportunities; it’s also fulfilling what God directs us to do. Through our Tech Institute, we teach cybersecurity, advanced AI, and software development to help young people succeed without engaging in illegal activities.”
The S-Mobile Tech Institute, officially registered in September 2024 and launched in September 2025, offers online and in-person classes. Local residents benefit from one month of free training, while students develop practical applications and digital solutions that can generate income.
“Our approach transforms learners from liabilities to assets,” he said.
Acknowledging the difficulties in the sector, he noted:
“Many people still do not understand the digital business model. Opportunities exist, but locals often fail to seize them. SMobile is currently the only Enugu-based direct MTN distributor. Competition is fierce, and infrastructural issues, including vandalism of telecom equipment, remain significant challenges.”
Despite these hurdles, SMobile continues to grow through strategic planning, innovation, and customer commitment.
“Telecommunication technology is creating jobs, and we are determined to empower more youths. With the right strategy, dedication, and digital solutions, we can expand further and continue contributing to the socioeconomic development of the Southeast,” he said.
This award not only recognises entrepreneurial excellence but also highlights a model of business-led youth empowerment in Nigeria.
