Efforts to curb the growing burden of cancer in Enugu State received a major boost as the Enugu State Ministry of Health and the Nigerian Cancer Society strengthened collaboration to drive awareness, early detection and improved access to treatment.

The renewed partnership was sealed during a strategic courtesy visit by the Enugu State Branch of the Nigerian Cancer Society, led by its Chairman, Ven. Pharm. Samson Ezea, to the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, in his office.

The visit, described by stakeholders as timely and impactful, focused on deepening cooperation between the Society and the Ministry to intensify cancer awareness campaigns, promote early diagnosis, strengthen prevention efforts and expand access to quality treatment services across the state.

Speaking during the meeting, Ezea commended the state government for ongoing reforms in the health sector and stressed the urgency of sustained advocacy and policy backing to combat cancer.

He emphasised the need for grassroots sensitisation and stronger institutional support to reduce the rising incidence of the disease.

The Society, he said, remains committed to partnering with the Ministry in implementing statewide screening programmes and enhancing professional capacity building for healthcare providers.

Responding, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ugwu, welcomed the delegation and applauded the Nigerian Cancer Society for its dedication to combating cancer in the state.

He reiterated that the Enugu State Government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, is determined to strengthen cancer control programmes and expand early diagnosis initiatives.

According to him, the administration has resolved to promote sustained public enlightenment on lifestyle modification and routine screening as critical tools in reducing cancer-related morbidity and mortality.

The engagement marks a significant step toward a more coordinated and result-driven approach in the fight against cancer in Enugu State, reinforcing a shared commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of residents.
