The National Police Council has confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, formally ratifying his appointment as Nigeria’s 23rd police chief.

The decision was taken on Monday at a meeting of the Council held at the State House in Abuja and chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The session was attended by several state governors and senior government officials.

Disu had earlier been appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police on February 24 following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. In accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Police Act, his appointment required confirmation by the National Police Council before he could assume office on a substantive basis.

Formal Transition in Police Leadership

With the Council’s endorsement, Disu now formally takes charge of the Nigeria Police Force at a time when the country continues to grapple with complex security challenges.

A seasoned officer with decades of operational and administrative experience, Disu previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory. He also held the position of Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Special Protection Unit (SPU).

Top Officials in Attendance

Among those present at the meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Geidam; and Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu.

Also in attendance were Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun; Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule; Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang; as well as the deputy governors of Kogi and Delta states.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Ojo and other cabinet members were also present.

The confirmation marks a new chapter in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, with expectations high that the new IGP will steer reforms and strengthen internal security operations nationwide.
