The true test of a great leader lies not only in the structures he builds but also in the successor he chooses.
This morning, I found myself reflecting with gratitude to God for the vision and grace bestowed upon former Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, in choosing a worthy successor for Enugu State. Many may not fully appreciate the magnitude of that decision, yet the growth, stability, and future of any state depend greatly on who takes the mantle of leadership next.
There were hundreds of aspirants some publicly known and others quietly lobbying behind the scenes all seeking to emerge as the party’s flag bearer. In such a critical moment, only a leader with foresight, courage, and clarity of purpose can make the right choice.
From among many contenders, through divine direction and the wisdom of the former Governor, ndi Enugu were presented with His Excellency, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. Many younger people, myself included, did not know him at the time. Before the primaries, there was widespread belief that the ticket would go to Isi-Uzo we passionately campaigned with the slogan “Ka Isi-Uzo Je.” Yet destiny had a different plan.
Today, we are witnessing how that singular decision is reshaping the trajectory of Enugu State. Peter Mbah has proven not only to be the right choice but the best person to lead Enugu to greater heights. He came prepared, equipped with experience, capacity, and a clear development blueprint aimed at long term prosperity.
Presently, Enugu stands tall in the South East in terms of security, economic drive, and infrastructure development. As former Governor Sullivan Chime remarked, Peter Mbah has practically turned Enugu into a construction yard. Across the state, over 3,000 projects are ongoing including the construction of 260 Smart Schools, Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres, and extensive road networks. One project particularly dear to me is the dualization of the Ugwuogo Opi Nsukka Road linking to Enugu a transformative development for mobility and commerce.
Enugu has steadily evolved into a major destination for tourism and business. Investors and visitors from across Nigeria increasingly recognize it as one of the most promising states for enterprise and opportunity.
Imagine for a moment if that succession decision had gone wrong. We might not be enjoying the quality of governance and visible development we see today. For this, immense appreciation goes to former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for presenting ndi Enugu with what many now regard as one of the most impactful leaders in the state’s history.
I have no doubt that His Excellency Peter Mbah, having demonstrated competence and vision, will in turn lay the foundation for another capable leader when his tenure concludes. True leadership is not just about today it is about continuity, structure, and legacy.
