Tinubu Celebrates Obasanjo at 89

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former President and elder statesman, Olusegun Obasanjo, on the occasion of his 89th birthday, describing him as a towering figure whose influence transcends Nigeria and Africa.

In a State House press release signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu rejoiced with the former leader, acknowledging his significant contributions to national development and continental affairs.

The President noted Obasanjo’s courage and sacrifices in service to the country, recalling his tenure as military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, during which he handed over power to a civilian administration in 1979. Tinubu also highlighted Obasanjo’s return to leadership as Nigeria’s first civilian president in the Fourth Republic, serving from 1999 to 2007.

According to the statement, President Tinubu affirmed the former leader’s historic experiences, including leading troops to preserve Nigeria’s unity during the civil war, enduring imprisonment for speaking out against tyranny, and consistently championing Africa’s political and economic interests on the global stage.

“As Chief Obasanjo turns 89, the President acknowledges the zeal and wisdom he has brought into Nigeria’s development process through his books and regular interventions, revealing a depth of patriotism to nation-building,” the statement read.

President Tinubu further prayed for more years of good health, strength and wisdom for the former president as he continues to contribute to national discourse and serve humanity.

Chief Obasanjo clocks 89 on March 5.
