The National Woman Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chinenyenwa Ogbu, has called on Nigerian women to embrace pragmatic politics and strengthen collaboration with like-minded organisations to advance women’s emancipation in Nigeria and across the globe.

Ogbu made the call on Friday while addressing journalists in Enugu as part of activities marking this year’s International Women’s Day.

She commended the resilience and contributions of Nigerian women toward building an egalitarian society based on equal rights and opportunities, urging them to continue speaking out on national issues that affect their lives and the future of the country.

“Women play a pivotal role in building an egalitarian society. I encourage Nigerian women to rise to the challenge of contemporary demands,” Ogbu said.

“We need to use our numerical strength and God-given advantage to champion good governance. PDP has provided us with the platform to attain our might. We are the family builders; by implications we anchor national growth. This is the time for Nigerian and indeed African women to let our voices be heard.”

The PDP women leader also paid tribute to several prominent Nigerian women whose leadership and achievements have inspired many across the country.

She specifically cited the contributions of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Minister of Finance; Oby Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education; and the late Dora Akunyili, former Minister of Information, urging women to emulate their dedication to public service and national development.

Ogbu maintained that the PDP has consistently provided a platform for women to thrive and contribute meaningfully to governance.

“I celebrate the strength, impacts and dogged contributions of Nigerian women to the building of an egalitarian society, where justice, equity and agape love shall reign,” she said.

“I encourage my colleagues to keep breaking barriers, sharing goals and recognising your capabilities.”

She further urged Nigerian women to resist marginalisation and instead assert their place in leadership and national development.

“Nigerian women should not accept to be squeezed into a corner rather they should break-forth and be the shining stars. May we always find our voices and paths in the midst of utter difficulties and extreme challenges,” she added.

This year’s International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8, is themed “Give to Gain,” highlighting the importance of collaboration, recognition and community engagement in fostering inclusive participation in research and advancing science and society.
