The national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has directed the Delta State Council of the union to immediately reinstate all aspirants earlier disqualified from the forthcoming election of the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel.
In a letter dated March 12, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council in Asaba, the National Secretary of the union, Achike Chude, instructed that the affected aspirants be readmitted into the electoral process.
The directive, titled “Re: Warri Correspondents Election,” emphasized that while the disqualified contestants must be reinstated, the council should conduct a fresh screening exercise to ensure that only qualified candidates participate in the poll.
According to the communication from the NUJ national secretariat, the screening must strictly follow the union’s constitutional guidelines to safeguard the credibility and transparency of the election.
“The affected individuals should be reinstated into the electoral process,” Chude stated in the letter, adding that the council must “thoroughly screen the three aspirants to ensure that only those who meet the required qualifications are permitted to contest.”
The national secretariat further directed that the election of the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel should proceed as earlier scheduled once the screening process is concluded.
Copies of the letter were also forwarded to the Vice President/Secretary of NUJ Zone F as well as the Chairman of the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel.
The development is expected to significantly alter the political dynamics ahead of the chapel election, reopening the contest to previously disqualified aspirants and widening participation among eligible members of the Warri correspondents’ community in Delta State.
