MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has announced plans to carry out major maintenance work at the Trans-Ekulu Injection Substation in Enugu, a development that will lead to a temporary power outage in several parts of the city this weekend.
The Head of Communications at MEDL, Emeka Ezeh, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday, explaining that the exercise is aimed at installing a newly procured 11KV indoor switchgear panel at the facility.
According to Ezeh, the maintenance operation will last 48 hours, beginning at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, and ending on Sunday, March 15, 2026.
He said the installation work will affect two 11KV feeders connected to the Trans-Ekulu Injection Substation—Phase 6 and Dhamija feeders—resulting in temporary power interruptions for customers served by those lines.
Areas expected to experience the outage include Trans-Ekulu Flyover, Oshimiri axis, RCC Quarters, Green Roof, Ugbo Odogwu, Agu Abor, Zion Hill, Ogbanokwute, Ogbuowere, Ugboenyi, Keshington Plaza, Sani Abacha Street, Emeka Abalu Street, the Old Police Station area, Augustine Agu axis, Ogbaga, and Chike Egwuonwu.
Other affected locations are Hill View, Dhamija, Agu Owa, St. Mary, St. Andrew, the School of Dental Technology area, North 4th, Road 10, Old Akonobi, Mary Emmanuel, Prof. Anosa, Malunze axis, Green Kpoloko axis, Winners Estate axis, Roads 12, 9 and 8, as well as Ivory Estate and adjoining neighbourhoods.
“We appeal for the patience and understanding of our customers who will be affected by this maintenance exercise, as it is aimed at enhancing service delivery,” Ezeh said.
The MEDL spokesman noted that the new equipment, valued at about ₦200 million, forms part of the company’s broader effort to improve network reliability and deliver more stable electricity supply to consumers.
Ezeh explained that the upgrade became necessary following an explosion at the control room of the Trans-Ekulu Injection Substation on January 21, 2026, at about 7:23 p.m., which damaged critical equipment at the facility.
He added that the company has already initiated procurement processes for additional components identified for replacement within its network as part of MEDL’s ongoing maintenance and system improvement strategy.
