Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has dismissed as fake a viral graphic circulating on social media which claims he described Peter Obi as “a great man but not fit for president now” ahead of the 2027 election.
The image, which has been widely shared online, attributes the statement to Melaye as a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), suggesting he questioned Obi’s suitability for the presidency.
However, reacting to the claim on his official account on X on Friday morning, Melaye categorically denied making the statement.
“This is fake and not from me,” he wrote.
The rebuttal effectively debunks the graphic, which shows photos of Melaye and Obi alongside the caption claiming the former senator criticized Obi’s presidential ambition.
Political observers note that misleading graphics and fabricated quotes have increasingly circulated on social media as early alignments and debates around Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election begin to intensify.
Melaye’s clarification is a reminder of the growing concerns about political misinformation online, particularly posts designed to portray public figures as attacking or endorsing rivals without verified statements.
By publicly disowning the quote, the former lawmaker signaled that the viral message should not be taken as his position regarding Obi or the 2027 presidential contest.
