The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has called on people of the South-East and other Biafran communities to immediately register for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing the document as a crucial political tool for determining their future.

In a press statement issued on March 13, 2026, the group said the resolution was reached during its National Executive meeting presided over by its leader, Uchenna Madu.

The statement, signed by MASSOB’s National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel, urged all constitutionally eligible voters in the region to obtain their PVCs at the nearest office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“MASSOB ordered all Biafrans that are constitutionally eligible to vote to immediately go for voters registration card in the nearest INEC office because permanent voters cards is our political weapons and power determination,” the statement said.

The group stressed that greater participation in electoral registration would help people of the region influence political developments within Nigeria.

“The people of Biafra must occupy and dictate our political spaces in Nigeria. Ndigbo have delayed our political progress and emancipation through non participation of electoral exercises.”

According to MASSOB, possessing a PVC is not only important for Nigerian elections but could also play a role in any future referendum on Biafra’s self-determination.

“Possession of the PVC is not only for Nigerian elections but also for future Biafra Referendum participation. Boycotting registration could harm chances of Biafra sovereignty.”

The group added that voter registration could help determine the demographic strength of the region in any future political arrangement.

“For a proposed statehood of Biafra to be ordered and declared by United Nations, the voting population of Biafrans through the registration and possession of the voters card must be captured in the national demography of the existing political entity (Nigeria) from which the voting population of the coming statehood (Biafra) is seeking for a separation.”

MASSOB also called for a review of the current voter registration exercise, alleging irregularities in previous registration exercises conducted by INEC.

“MASSOB calls for review of the current voters registration exercise because the entire permanent voters registration exercise is fraudulently dubious schemed to favor only the northern region.”

The group claimed that underage persons were allegedly registered in past elections.

“We saw even underaged persons of northern origin below 18 years registered by INEC for 2019 and 2023 general elections.”

Despite its criticisms, the organisation reiterated its commitment to pursuing the Biafra cause through peaceful means.

“MASSOB still believe and anchored on our principal of non violence towards all our approaches to Biafra actualisation and restoration. We don’t believe in arms struggle. We shall abide by all the principles and charters of United Nation declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People and African Charter on the Human and People Rights of Indigenous People.”

The group maintained that civic participation, including voter registration, remains central to its strategy for advancing its political objectives.
