The United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) has confirmed the loss of a U.S. military refueling aircraft during operations over Iraq.

In a press release issued on March 12, 2026, the command said the incident involved a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker during Operation Epic Fury, noting that the aircraft went down in western Iraq while operating in friendly airspace.

According to the statement released from Tampa, Florida, two aircraft were involved in the incident.

“U.S. Central Command is aware of the loss of a U.S. KC-135 refueling aircraft. The incident occurred in friendly airspace during Operation Epic Fury, and rescue efforts are ongoing,” the command said.

USCENTCOM explained that while one of the aircraft crashed, the second aircraft involved in the incident landed safely.

“Two aircraft were involved in the incident. One of the aircraft went down in western Iraq, and the second landed safely,” the statement added.

The command also clarified that the crash was not the result of any attack.

“This was not due to hostile fire or friendly fire.”

USCENTCOM said further details would be released as investigations and rescue operations continue.

“More information will be made available as the situation develops. We ask for continued patience to gather additional details and provide clarity for the families of service members.”
