Residents of Maiduguri were thrown into panic on Monday evening after multiple explosions suspected to have been triggered by improvised explosive devices planted by Boko Haram terrorists.
The blasts were reported in several parts of the Borno State capital, including areas around the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate, the Monday Market Roundabout and the Elkanemi area.
Witnesses said the first explosion occurred at about 7 p.m., shortly after Muslims broke their fast, sending shockwaves through nearby neighbourhoods and forcing residents to flee for safety.
Security sources suspect the attackers planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in strategic locations across the city.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to confirm whether the explosions resulted in casualties.
The incident occurred only hours after suspected Boko Haram fighters attacked a military facility in Ajilari, an outskirt of Maiduguri.
During the attack, the terrorists reportedly set parts of the military location ablaze and made away with a patrol vehicle.
However, troops stationed at the facility mounted a counteroffensive and successfully repelled the assault.
Security sources said several of the attackers were neutralised during the gun battle, while others fled the scene with gunshot wounds.
The twin incidents have heightened security concerns in the Borno State capital as authorities intensify surveillance across the city.
