The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the arrest of four suspected bandits near Akure Airport following a coordinated security operation involving multiple agencies.

In a press release dated March 15, 2026, FAAN said the suspects were apprehended within the vicinity of the airport in Ondo State after a distress alert raised concerns about suspicious movements around the facility.

According to the agency, security personnel quickly mobilised after individuals were spotted behind the airport perimeter toward the Eleyewo community.

“Four suspected bandits were apprehended within the vicinity of Akure Airport following a coordinated security operation involving aviation and local security agencies,” FAAN stated.

The operation involved FAAN’s Aviation Security unit alongside the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force, as well as other local security outfits.

During the search operation, some suspects reportedly attempted to flee the area but were later apprehended by the joint security team.

“Four suspects were eventually apprehended by the joint security team and have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation,” the agency said.

FAAN commended the cooperation among security agencies and community groups, noting that the collaboration played a crucial role in the successful operation.

“FAAN commends the swift collaboration among aviation security personnel, the military, the police, and local security groups, including Amotekun and community vigilantes, whose joint efforts led to the arrest,” the statement added.

The agency also noted that the incident underscores the need for stronger security measures around airport perimeters across the country.

According to FAAN, the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, with the backing of the Presidency under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has intensified efforts to strengthen airport security nationwide.

“The Federal Government has accelerated the provision of modern perimeter fencing and enhanced security infrastructure at airports across the country,” the statement said.

FAAN added that the security upgrades are being implemented in phases to ensure airports under its management are better protected against unlawful access and other threats.

The statement, signed by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, reassured travellers and host communities of the authority’s commitment to safety.

“FAAN reassures the travelling public and airport host communities of its unwavering commitment to maintaining the safety and security of all airport facilities nationwide,” Agbebire said.
