The Katsina State Government has confirmed that 18 people were killed during a violent confrontation between local vigilante groups and so-called ‘repentant bandits’ in Jibia Local Government Area.
The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Muazu, disclosed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, March 17, saying the clash took place in Falale and Kadobe villages.
According to Dr. Muazu, members of the vigilante groups from the affected communities engaged in a gunfight with some repentant bandits, resulting in the neutralisation of three suspects.
“The incident triggered a violent reprisal attack by suspected bandits on the communities, which resulted in the killing of 15 additional persons,” he said.
He added that security forces, including the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), Civilian Watch (C-Watch), and community leaders, intervened to contain the situation.
“The joint operation prevented further loss of life and restored peace in the affected villages,” Dr. Muazu stated.
The commissioner appealed to residents to remain calm and allow security agencies to complete their investigations.
“We understand the pain and loss experienced by the families affected. We are committed to ensuring justice and preventing future incidents,” he said.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to security under Governor Dikko Radda.
“Gov. Radda’s administration remains focused on bringing lasting peace to Katsina State. Nothing will distract us from our commitment to secure lives and property. We will remain resolute in our efforts,” Dr. Muazu assured.
