Israel has confirmed the killing of a senior Iranian military figure, Alireza Tangsiri, in a targeted strike, marking a significant escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that Tangsiri, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, was killed during the operation, describing him as a key figure in maritime military activities.
Katz said the commander was directly responsible for mining and attempting to block the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route, adding that the strike was intended as a warning to Iranian forces.
“The IDF will hunt you down and eliminate you one by one,” he said during a military assessment earlier in the day.
According to Israeli officials, the strike took place in Bandar Abbas, where Tangsiri was reportedly meeting with senior IRGC Navy commanders.
Katz further stressed that Israel would continue its military operations against Iranian targets with “full force” in pursuit of its objectives in the ongoing conflict.
The killing of the top naval commander represents a major flashpoint, heightening fears of further confrontation between the two regional powers, particularly given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz to global energy supplies.
