Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is expected to resign from his position to contest the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 elections, according to sources familiar with the development.

The anticipated move is linked to a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, mandating all political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to step down on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive was announced by Dewan Goshit, Head of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), in a statement issued earlier in the week.

Sources indicated that Tuggar’s expected resignation follows the recently concluded national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where attention has now shifted to cabinet members believed to be nursing political ambitions.

Supporters of the minister from Bauchi State, who attended the convention, hinted that a formal declaration of his governorship bid is imminent, citing growing backing for his candidacy.

Tuggar, a seasoned diplomat and politician, previously served as a member of the House of Representatives representing Gamawa Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2011.

He later served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany between 2017 and 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, before his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2023.

With the resignation deadline drawing closer, focus remains on political appointees expected to comply with the President’s directive as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
